A brand monitoring dashboard can show thousands of results without answering the question that matters: what requires a response today? A useful media monitoring workflow finds relevant mentions, separates noise from evidence, assigns interpretation, and preserves enough context for a communications decision. Coverage and analyst time matter as much as the number of charts.
This guide compares Mention, Brand24, Meltwater, Lumen by Talkwalker, and Awario for external news, web, and social monitoring. It focuses on discovering and interpreting third-party discussion. Official features and commercial pages were checked October 10, 2026. We have not tested detection completeness, sentiment accuracy, or response speed; recommendations are editorial analysis of the documented operating models.
Start with a list of sources, markets, languages, and decisions. A product that covers your essential regional outlets is more useful than one advertising a larger general source count. Ask how historic access, query limits, update cadence, exports, and retained mentions are defined. Those boundaries affect whether you can reproduce last month’s report and investigate a new event.
Five media monitoring choices compared
| Product | Best fit | Main strength | Meaningful tradeoff | Pricing reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mention | Teams needing a scoped monitoring workspace | Boolean queries, assignments and reporting | Historical data and API are paid add-ons | Company offer; request confirmed amount |
| Brand24 | Teams wanting explicit volume and cadence tiers | Keywords, mention limits and update intervals | Entry plan updates every twelve hours | Individual $249 monthly or $199/month annually |
| Meltwater | PR teams needing broad scoped media intelligence | Media monitoring within a wider communications platform | Modules and coverage require a detailed proposal | Custom pricing by program scope |
| Lumen by Talkwalker | Organizations coordinating consumer intelligence | Topic analysis and cross-team reporting | Volume, history and governance differ by package | Core, Analyze and Business: custom quote |
| Awario | Teams working with bounded topic budgets | Defined topic and mention allowances | New and stored mention limits are different | Starter $49 monthly or $29/month annually |
Mention
Mention’s current Company offer includes web and social monitoring, Boolean search, sentiment and share-of-voice reporting, assignments, and team access. Historical data and API access are explicitly identified as paid add-ons. Those boundaries matter when a monitoring project must feed another system or compare a new campaign with an earlier period.
The current clean browser view does not provide a reliable numeric subscription amount. It directs buyers to a demonstration, so obtain a confirmed Company proposal rather than importing a historical Solo or Pro price. Record alerts, mention volumes, users, history, and export rights in that proposal.
Mention’s own FAQ says Publish and Respond are being progressively deprecated and directs publishing and responding needs to Agorapulse. Older navigation copy still advertises those functions, making the FAQ important to the buying decision. Our shortlist is Mention for monitoring and analyst collaboration, with a separate response workflow planned explicitly. The limitation is the add-on and product boundary. Demonstrate an ambiguous brand-name query, a mention assigned to a colleague, and a historic comparison before assuming the package covers the full communications routine.
Brand24
Brand24’s pricing makes keyword counts, mention volume, user access, and update cadence visible. Individual has three keywords, 2,000 mentions per month, one user, and twelve-hour updates. Team increases the allowance to seven keywords and 10,000 mentions, with unlimited users and hourly updates. Pro moves to twelve keywords, 40,000 mentions, and real-time updates.
The USD list shows Individual at $249 on monthly billing or $199 per month billed annually. Team is $349 monthly or $299 annually, while Pro is $499 monthly or $399 annually. Annual figures are monthly equivalents of a longer subscription, not the cost of a cancellable monthly plan. Higher packages and add-ons have their own scope.
The strength is being able to compare cadence and capacity directly. The limitation is that the lowest tier may be unsuitable when the team needs prompt incident triage or several analysts. Our recommendation is to model a busy month before picking a tier. Test variants of your brand and likely false matches, then estimate whether the keyword allowance leaves space for competitors and product names. Keep a human review of sentiment and source context before reporting an issue to leadership.
Meltwater
Meltwater offers media monitoring and analysis within a broader platform for communications and market intelligence. Its product description covers tracking coverage and turning collected mentions into reports and alerts. This makes it relevant when PR needs a coordinated view of news and other discussion rather than a small number of social keyword alerts.
The official pricing page uses tailored proposals. Cost depends on modules, source and regional breadth, data volume, workflows, users, integrations, onboarding, support, and contract terms. A vendor budgeting article includes indicative investment figures, but those are not binding subscription offers. This guide uses the scoped pricing page as the commercial reference.
Our shortlist recommendation is Meltwater for programs where source coverage and cross-team reporting justify a formal scoping exercise. Its tradeoff is that proposals can contain different solutions, making a headline annual number a weak comparison. Supply a named outlet list, languages, expected analyst roles, and export requirements. Ask the vendor to show a real report structure with source-level context. Separate media monitoring from any press distribution, journalist database, or influencer module you do not actually need.
Lumen by Talkwalker
Talkwalker’s current site names the platform Lumen by Talkwalker and describes the closer connection with Hootsuite. Its monitoring and social intelligence offering includes topic and channel analytics, dashboards, alerts, and AI-assisted summaries or questions. Evaluate the current product packaging rather than using the older brand name as evidence of an unchanged contract.
Core, Analyze, and Business require custom quotes. The pricing page includes unlimited users, onboarding, training, and support across plans. Analyze expands result volume and topics; Business adds history, further volume, and enterprise workspace or governance options. Unlimited seats should not be confused with unlimited collected data or unrestricted history.
This is our shortlist for a program that serves PR, social marketing, and consumer-insight stakeholders from one maintained monitoring process. The limitation is aligning those stakeholders on query definitions and access. Demonstrate how a broad consumer topic differs from a precise brand query, and confirm which sources are available in your markets. Ask how an analyst explains the evidence behind an automated summary and how reports preserve source links when circulated outside the platform.
Awario
Awario organizes monitoring around topics, each of which can contain multiple keywords. Starter includes three topics, 30,000 new mentions per month, 5,000 stored mentions per topic, and one team member. Pro expands to fifteen topics, 300,000 new mentions, 15,000 stored per topic, and ten team members. These definitions make it important to distinguish incoming capacity from retained research history.
The published USD rates are Starter $49 monthly or $29 per month billed annually, Pro $149 monthly or $89 annually, and Enterprise $399 monthly or $249 annually. A custom solution is also offered. Verify the required reporting, white-label, export, and API entitlement in the plan comparison rather than assuming every label listed on the page applies to every tier.
Awario belongs on the shortlist for a team with a clear topic budget and a defined reporting routine. The tradeoff is that a high-volume topic may consume retained capacity even when the monthly allowance looks generous. Use an ambiguous brand term and a seasonal campaign query in the evaluation. Decide how long you need to retain evidence and whether exporting it changes the work required to produce a repeatable report.
Build the query and response routine before the dashboard
Write a query brief that includes exact names, aliases, exclusions, languages, and known false positives. Use the same brief across shortlisted products. Include a small set of known source examples and ask which are available, how quickly they appear, and what licensing or platform restrictions apply. A source-count claim does not establish coverage of your specific outlet.
Define separate queues for routine coverage, customer complaints, misinformation, and potentially urgent issues. Give each queue an owner and a review cadence. Preserve the original source, publication date, and context. Sentiment labels are useful hints, but sarcasm, quotations, and mixed-language discussion require judgment.
For reporting, distinguish mention count from reach estimates and avoid treating either as proof of business impact. Explain deduplication and query changes between periods. If you change exclusions halfway through a campaign, record that change before presenting a trend as comparable. Request a sample export and check that another analyst can reproduce the conclusion.
Before purchase, confirm source coverage, historical access, update interval, collected and stored limits, user roles, export rights, and the complete annual obligation. Choose Brand24 or Awario when defined allowances fit the routine; shortlist Mention, Meltwater, or Lumen when collaboration or broader program scope requires a proposal. The best fit is the tool that supports a reliable interpretation process.
Owned publishing needs a different workflow; compare social media management software. For requesting and responding to public customer reviews, see customer review management. Media monitoring should connect to those teams without confusing observed discussion with content your organization controls.
